Sixteen Kids

Have you ever had a moment when you thought…”Wow, I cannot believe it…I have children! Didn’t I just graduate?”

Tim and I have this little diddy we sing, “‘Cause We’re Adults Now…” We sing it every time something reminds us that we didn’t just graduate…that we have a mortgage, children, jobs, and are gracing our middle years.

I had one of those smack-you-in-the-face-experiences this weekend. Believe me when I say…I had sixteen kids at our house on Saturday and there was no party involved. Three of my college roommates came over, and between the four of us we have thirteen children (10 and under). Throw in three neighbors and we had pure craziness.

The beautiful thing…is that they all got along. There were no major meltdowns. There were no stitches involved. There was virtually no whining. There was however, an enormous consumption of food. Sixteen kids can blow through food, snacks, and juice boxes in unbelievable speeds.

It was a gorgeous day. The trampoline (my #1 purchase of 2007), an old fence line, a tree, walnuts and a mallet, a handful of weapons, and fusion beads kept the children occupied all day long.

I looked around at one point to my roommates and thought…weren’t we just having a keger on Jackson Street? Weren’t we just sleeping ’till noon and skipping our morning classes? And, how did we get here this fast? Do I have wrinkles?

Then…my very next thought was…how unbelievably blessed we were to call thirteen children our own. How blessed we are that they will grow up together. And…how everytime we ask them how we know each other they will say the same thing…college roommates!

I got the Daddy Doll in full swing as you can see below.

Special thanks to…Tiffany Dunbar for demonstrating enormous courage and strength. Debbie for her OCD cleaning strategies. You would have never guessed we were bombarded with tons of little hands and feet. And of course, for her unwavering loyalty. Lisa for her sweetness combined with brutal honesty. Kevin Hohman for doing some playset repair work. Shery C. for a simple, great meal. My mom for watching the kids while we had marathon photo shoots today.

  1. Bud, you have an elegant way of capturing life and sharing it with the world!

I’m sure most of our viewers are reading the content, shaking their head up-and-down, saying “yeah, I’m a parent now, wow - that was quick.”

    I love you!

  3. It’s below 100 now - about 86 degrees. It can get down in the 50s at night and you think you’re going to suffer from Hypothermia.

  4. Looking at Gage’s head, it looks like someone put red dye in the top of his hair, or he cut his head and left some blood in the wig. Hopefully not the latter.
